The Department of Public Works provides high quality, cost effective, efficient, safe services involving public infrastructure and facilities that enhance the quality of life and support growth in the City of Worcester.

We are dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure and appearance of the City. Our responsibilities include:

  • Delivery of safe, potable drinking water
  • Design and construction management of streets, bridges and public buildings
  • Managing stormwater and the proper disposal of sewage
  • Street lighting
  • Weekly household trash and recycling collection
  • Year-round street maintenance and repair

Trash & Recycling

The Trash & Recycling Division is responsible for trash pick-up schedule, recycling pick-up and information, bulk waste disposal, yard waste drop-off and more.

Water & Sewer

The Water & Sewer Division is responsible for storing, treating and delivering safe drinking water and collecting and transporting wastewater and stormwater.

Streets

The Streets Division is responsible for snow plowing, street sweeping, abandoned vehicles, traffic signs, street resurfacing, pothole repairs, streetscape, and more.

Engineering

The Engineering Division manages the planning, design, construction and preservation of the City's public infrastructure. The Division is responsible for streets and sidewalks projects, sewer programs, private street conversions, Conservation Commission and Planning Board issues, bridge construction and right of way permitting.

Vote today in the Name a Snowplow Contest! Voting will remain open from Dec. 1 - 12, 2025. The four winning entries will be announced the week of Dec. 15, 2025. The winning classrooms will receive a visit from and photo op with their named truck, DPW swag, and recognition at a future City Council meeting.

Fall Leaf Collection Program

The annual Fall Leaf Collection program typically starts the first week in November and takes 4 to 5 weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

Residential Drop Off Center

Residential Drop Off Center

The drop-off center allows residents to dispose of an unlimited number of bulk waste items in a timely manner and at a low cost. There is also a yard waste drop-off area and a compost/winter sand pickup area.
