The City of Worcester Human Resources Department offers Civil Service open examinations as the service need may require. Promotional exams are ONLY for current employees of the City of Worcester. Civil Service promotional examinations will be offered according to the departments' requests.

The WPD is a Civil Service Department. You must score high enough on the Civil Service Exam to be considered. Exams for Worcester are every two years. Exams are scheduled by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division in Boston, 1-800-392-6178.

A three-part test that is required to qualify you for entry-level employment as a Worcester Police Officer.
Anyone ages 19 - 31 with a high school diploma, High School Equivalency credential (GED) or three years of experience in the armed forces. You do not have to be a United States citizen OR a Massachusetts resident. However, candidates who have resided in Massachusetts for 12 months before the exam are entitled to be placed on the eligible Civil Service list as a resident for that community ahead of any non-residents.
The exam is authored and conducted in English, but a Spanish written exam is available to qualified candidates by request.
Yes! Worcester is a diverse community and encourages multilingual candidates to apply. In some cases, the Worcester Police Department may request a language-based hiring list, which would be limited to candidates who are fluent in a specific language identified by the Department.
The test is taken on a computer and managed by a proctor. It lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, and includes a Written Ability Test, Life Experience Survey and Work Styles Questionnaire. The sub-tests are designed to assess cognitive ability, past relevant experience and personal values that are essential to being a successful municipal Police Officer.
You will receive a score notice within 60 days of completing the exam.
