The Investigative Division of the Worcester Police Department is responsible for follow-up investigations for crimes against persons and property. The major areas of responsibility are violent crimes including homicide, robbery, burglary, sexual assault and domestic violence.
The investigation divisions utilize crime analysis information and collaborative strategies in order to effectively address major crime problems in the community. Key to the professionalism of the investigative division is their relationship with other criminal justice, law enforcement and social service agencies.
The Investigative Division includes the following:
The Worcester Police Department Real Time Crime Center leverages technology to provide accurate information and investigative support to our officers and detectives for the benefit of our community. The Center allows police to access cameras already in place on properties around the city tied to a sophisticated surveillance system based at police headquarters, allowing officers to monitor incidents in real-time. The Center gives officers in the field instant information to assist with investigations, identify patterns and stop emerging crime.
The mission of the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board is to promote public safety through educating and informing the public in order to prevent further victimization.
In the spring of 2014, the department’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system became integrated into the Real Time Crime Center. ShotSpotter alerts police when and where gunfire occurs. The software provides responding officers with critical information such as number of shots fired, shooter position, direction of travel, and the exact time of gunfire. Knowing this precise information gives the officers the ability to make tactical decisions and approach situations in a safer manner.
