SECURITY GUARD
DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, RECREATION AND CEMETERY
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Security Guard for the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cemetery. Under the direction of the Senior Security Guard, the position patrols and safeguards City-owned parks, facilities, beaches, pools, open field spaces and Hope Cemetery. This position will enforce the rules and regulations established by the Department of Parks, Recreation, & Cemetery with an emphasis on parking enforcement. This position will patrol City-owned properties by vehicle, bicycle, and on foot. The Security Guard may also respond to first aid situations, assist with crowd control, and manage high-risk or rapidly evolving scenarios with professionalism and sound judgment. Work schedule will include evenings, nights (2nd Shift), and consecutive weekends. Occasionally, there may be day shift hours available.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Patrol and monitor City parks, beaches, building facilities, open field spaces, and property under the operation of the Parks Department
  • Patrol during day or night operations in all weather conditions by vehicle, bicycle, or foot patrol
  • Lock/unlock gates, doors. Turn on or off lights, heaters, air conditioners and other equipment as directed by supervisor
  • Report fire hazards and other unsafe conditions to supervisor
  • Perform parking enforcement including an electronic ticketing device
  • Maintain detailed records during shifts
  • Use permitting software and ready maps
  • Inspect building and grounds to prevent or detect leaks, illegal entry, parking violations, park permit violations, and other irregular or hazardous conditions
  • Conduct preliminary investigations and create incident reports and write narrative reports of accidents, thefts, disturbances, and emergency first-aid response
  • Perform crowd control during special events and verify proper authorization of park permits
  • Provide education to the public and answer questions on proper usage of the park system
  • Ensure facility rules and regulations are maintained
  • Investigate disturbances and report emergencies to police or fire
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Skilled in using handheld radios and operating communication systems
  • Skilled in providing customer service
  • Skilled in working with Microsoft Office 365, including data input, record keeping/tracking
  • Demonstrated report writing skills
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in an organized, detailed, and timely manner
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently and effectively interact with members of the public
  • Ability to work outside and be exposed to all weather conditions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and walk/hike long distances
  • Ability to read and interpret geographic and street maps
  • Ability to lift to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability and willingness to become First Aid and CPR/AED certified within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to read and interpret geographic maps and street maps
  • Ability to use mobile GPS devices to drive assigned motor vehicles throughout the City and Parks
  • Ability to successfully pass CORI/SORI
  • Regular onsite attendance is required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience as a security guard that includes vehicle patrols
  • Experience with laptop operations
  • Experience with written communications and report writing using computer software programs (i.e. Microsoft Office 365)
  • Experience using handheld radios
  • Valid and unrestricted Driver’s License. Driver’s License must be maintained for the length of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field or graduation from reserve/intermittent police academy
  • One (1) year of experience in written communication and report writing using computer software
  • One (1) year of prior law enforcement and/or military police/security experience
  • Certified in First-Aid and CPR/AED

SALARY RANGE: $27.27 - $34.07 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
