PLANT ENGINEER
FIRE DEPARTMENT
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for a Plant Engineer for the Fire Department.  Under the direction of the Senior Fire Apparatus Repairman, the Plant Engineer is responsible for the coordination, development and supervision of the cleaning, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of the Fire Department’s buildings and grounds, physical plant and the installation, repair and servicing of physical facilities.

 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Supervise and oversee the administration of building maintenance programs and functions for the Fire Department.
  • Maintain, repair, and service the Fire Department’s 10 fire stations and related buildings.
  • Oversee the outside vendors contracted to perform any maintenance or repair services for the Fire Department.
  • Ensure that physical plant facility, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, machinery and equipment are properly maintained and, when possible, make necessary repairs.
  • Ensure that grounds, lawns, walkways and parking areas are clean and maintained.
  • Make all required machinery and system(s) tests and inspections. Trouble shoot malfunctions or inoperative systems and make necessary repairs or corrections.
  • Assist in the purchasing of new or other physical facility machinery, equipment or services.
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies for the department and purchase necessary building supplies.
  • Follow and adhere to City government rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Follow progress of work of outside vendors and instruct as necessary to maintain proper flow of work and optimum performance.
  • Anticipate or investigate causes of delay or inadequate performance and take corrective measures
  • Make recommendations as to possible improvements in procedures or methods to increase effectiveness, reduce costs.

 SECONDARY ELEMENTS:

  • Prepare yearly capital rehabilitation budget.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of logs, records, reports, tests, analysis, documents, and other information.
  • Attend training seminars and meetings to maintain required licenses and certifications as well as stay abreast of latest practices and techniques associated with the maintenance and repair of Fire Department equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of building maintenance
  • Knowledge of building trades
  • Knowledge of physical plant operations
  • Knowledge of HVAC
  • Ability to schedule and prioritize work
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Regular onsite attendance is required

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus additional specialized trades training in building maintenance and repair
  • Five (5) years of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, physical plant experience
  • Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
  • Excellent communication skills

 PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associates degree in Construction Management or related field
  • Seven (7) years of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, physical plant experience

 SALARY RANGE: $31.08 - $37.89 hourly, full-time, with excellent benefits package.
