ASSISTANT WATER FILTRATION PLANT OPERATOR

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Water Filtration Plant Operator for the Water Operations Division within the Department of Public Works. Under the direction of the Head and Senior Operators, the position carries out operational procedures in the Water Filtration Plant. The Assistant Water Filtration Plant Operator assists with the independent operation, maintenance, and optimization of a 50 mgd Class IV direct filtration drinking water treatment plant, and all related systems, equipment, and instrumentation therein for the Department of Public Works (DPW), Water Operations Division for the City of Worcester. This position is responsible for following the Standard Operating Procedures related to the water treatment plant. The schedule for this position is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 13.33-hour shifts during the day.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
- Inspect plant equipment on a regular basis
- Operate water treatment equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures
- Maintain required log sheets
- Assist with keeping the plant operating in compliance with the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR) which produces safe drinking water
- Perform routine lab verification tests
- Recognize interruptions in proper treatment or system performance and take appropriate action
- Assist with performing or arranging maintenance of field instrumentation and equipment
- Operate various types of equipment in accordance with established procedures under direct supervision
- Other duties as assigned
SECONDARY ELEMENTS:
- Drive to remote related facilities
- Help maintain plant cleanliness and appearance
- Assist with snow removal, including shoveling and the operation of yard equipment
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions
- Familiarity with the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment
- Ability and willingness to learn to recognize interruption in proper treatment or system performance
- Ability to learn how to utilize laboratory techniques and analysis
- Knowledge & understanding of and the ability to follow all Water Filtration Plant Standard Operating Procedures
- Ability and willingness to learn compliance with Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR)
- Ability to lift 60 pounds over waist height
- Ability to climb a ladder
- Ability to understand and comply with all safety procedures, OSHA and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Ability to perform and maintain meticulous record keeping
- Ability to learn from the Plant Manager, Chief Operator, Head Operators, Senior Operators, Assistant Operators, Maintenance Staff and Laboratory Staff to continue the optimal operation, maintenance and upkeep of the Drinking Water Filtration Plant and all associated systems, equipment and analyzers
- Regular onsite attendance is required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to obtain Massachusetts T2 Certification within one (1) year of hire
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Massachusetts T1 Certification
- Massachusetts T2 Certification
- One (1) year of experience in the operation of water or wastewater treatment plants
SALARY RANGE: $20.17 - $24.37 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
