Senior Center Enhancements

• Construction of a new state-of-the-art intergenerational outdoor fitness park, the FitLot (sponsored by AARP of Massachusetts, organized by FitLot).
• Installed new windows, new hallway carpets and painted all of the common areas via federal CDBG funds.
• Interior lighting upgrades by converting 480 old fluorescent light fixtures to energy efficient LEDs (completed in the fall of 2019 using Green Communities grant and MassSave incentives).
• Demolition of the 12 Winthrop St building (completed in the summer of 2020 using a State MassWorks grant).
• Parking lot resurfacing and restriping (completed in the fall of 2020 using the MassWorks grant).
• Installation of a rain garden (receiving building roof stormwater runoff), long bioswales along the property lines and an underground stormwater management system to help infiltrate more water on site, reduce the heat island effect and make the site look more aesthetically pleasing (completed in the fall of 2020 using the 2019 Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Action grant, MassWorks grant and capital funds).
• Refurbished existing, unused rooms in the Nurses Building to create a new fitness center on the 1st floor (using the MassWorks grant and BCBS donation) and a new activity room on the 2nd floor (using MassWorks grant and capital funds).

In the coming months, additional work will be done, making the building more usable and sustainable:

• Installation of a 296 kW solar parking canopy (using city capital funds via an Energy Savings Performance Contract).
• Installation of solar thermal panels on the lunch room roof to offset hot water heating (again, using city capital funds via an Energy Savings Performance Contract).
