In an emergency, dial 9-1-1
The Massachusetts State administration is committed to fighting the opioid overdose epidemic on multiple fronts. Learn more about the State's response and see the latest statistics and data.
Naloxone
Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name of the nasal spray Narcan, is an FDA-approved medication that temporarily reverses an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. Naloxone takes 2 to 3 minutes to work and can last from 30 to 90 minutes. In the case of an overdose, medical help is still required and you must call 911.
The FDA has granted approval for Narcan to be available over the counter without a prescription. It is accessible in every pharmacy and drug store. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, as of March 2023, will cover over-the-counter non-prescription Narcan. MassHealth, among other insurers, cover prescription Narcan.

Local and State Naloxone Programs
The City of Worcester Health & Human Services has distributed Naloxboxes to 20 locations and agencies in the City, to improve visibility and immediate access to Naloxone. All the Naloxboxes were placed in high-use areas with the goal of improving accessibility to this life-saving medication.
If your local agency would like to request free Narcan or fentanyl strips through our Division of Public Health, please contact Elizabeth Wheeler at WheelerE@worcesterma.gov.
The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services also offers community organizations access to discounted Naloxone through the Community Naloxone Program (CNP).
