Ebola (Ebola Virus Disease - EVD)

A rare but serious viral illness affecting humans and some primates.

Current Situation: An Ebola outbreak is ongoing in parts of the DRC and Uganda. As of May 2026, No cases have been reported in Massachusetts or elsewhere in the U.S., and public risk remains low. State health authorities are prepared to act if a case emerges.

Transmission

Animal-to-human: Typically, via contact with infected wildlife (e.g., fruit bats, primates).

Human-to-human: Through direct contact with blood or body fluids from a symptomatic or deceased person, or contaminated materials. The virus may persist in semen for months post-recovery. CDC emphasizes that Ebola is not contagious until symptoms appear

Prevention

Vaccination: Available (Ervebo) for those at risk in outbreak areas.

Avoid contact: Do not handle blood, bodily fluids, bedding, or utensils used by infected individuals or the deceased.

Animal precautions: Steer clear of wildlife and avoid consuming undercooked game.

Hand hygiene: Regularly wash with soap or use sanitizer.

Symptoms

Incubation: 2–21 days (typically 8–10 days).

Initial (dry phase): Fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, sore throat, appetite loss.

Later (wet phase): Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, unexplained bleeding, rash, breathing issues, confusion. Severe illness may progress to shock and organ failure.

Treatment

No specific cure - a supportive care approach greatly improves chances:

  • IV or oral fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Medications for fever, pain, or blood pressure support
  • Oxygen therapy or transfusions
  • Regular monitoring of organ function and fluids
  • Treating secondary infections as needed

If you've been exposed and develop symptoms, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
