Forest Health Assessment

Hiking Trail Through Tree-Lines Woods of God's Acre Area in Worcester

In 2024, the City of Worcester conducted a Forest Health Assessment for properties under the custody of the Conservation Commission, with funding from the Massachusetts DCR Urban & Community Forestry Challenge Grant program. As part of this project, an aerial Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Assessment was performed for over 800 acres of City-owned conservation land. Eight properties, all located in Environmental Justice neighborhoods, were selected for on-the-ground field work to validate the UTC results, document baseline conditions, and develop land management recommendations. The City plans to use these reports to guide management decisions going forward, with the intention of maintaining and improving the ecological integrity and recreational value of these conservation areas.
