PSA: Millbrook St. Bridges Construction, Detours

WORCESTER, Mass. – MassDOT is managing the ongoing reconstruction of two bridges on Millbrook Street: one that crosses railroad tracks, and a second that crosses I-190. Work includes steel repair and painting, deck repair, bridge joint reconstruction, roadway and sidewalk repairs, and other structural and safety upgrades designed to extend the life of the bridges and improve long term roadway conditions.
Preconstruction began in March with minor signage and surveying. Significant reconstruction is expected to start Sept. 14, with details below. This phase is expected to be completed in Spring 2027. Please contact dot.feedbackdistrict3@dot.state.ma.us with any questions.
Beginning on September 14, traffic patterns on Millbrook Street will be modified:
- Eastbound traffic will be detoured.
- Pedestrian access will remain across the bridge.
- Westbound traffic will remain open across the bridge during all phases of construction.
- The detour is expected to remain in place through construction.
- Local access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
Detour Route Eastbound:
- Right Turn on Gold Star Boulevard
- Loop around to West Boylston Street
- Bear left at "I-290 Auburn-Shrewsbury"
- Take Exit 1 to I-290 EB
- I-290 EB to Exit 23 to Burncoat Street
Travel Tips:
- Follow all posted detour signage.
- Allow extra travel time through the area.
- Consider alternate routes during peak travel periods.
- Reduce speed and use caution through active work zones.
- Be mindful of construction crews and equipment.
