Traffic Advisory: Laurel St. Bridge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3/24/2026 10:53 am

WORCESTER, Mass. – On Thursday, March 26 at approximately 5 a.m., Laurel Street will be closed until the morning of Friday, April 3 due to ongoing MassDOT roadwork to set the new bridge beams for phase 1 of the Laurel Street bridge project.

Please exercise caution and follow posted detour signage. A police detail will also be present.

On Friday, April 3 at approximately 7 a.m., Laurel Street is expected to be re-opened to one-way (eastbound) traffic (as is currently the case.)

Full work schedule detailed below:

  • Thursday 3/26 and Friday 3/26, the contractor will make preparations for mobilizing a crane to the west side of the bridge on Laurel St. In addition, 3 trailers carrying the steel beams will be mobilized to Laurel St. Starting Tuesday 3/24, temporary “no parking” signs will be placed in the areas where the trailers will be parked.

  • Sunday night 3/29 the mobilization of the crane will be completed and crews will begin setting the first set of bridge beams. During the night there will be lane closures on I-290 Eastbound and Westbound. The two left lanes will be closed in both directions. Starting at midnight, there will be intermittent full closures on I-290 as each bridge beam is picked up, set in place, and secured. The intermittent full shutdowns will be implemented by Massachusetts State Police. This work will run until 5 a.m. at which time I-290 traffic will be returned to normal.

  • Monday night 3/30 there will be similar work to complete setting the bridge beams over the I-290 Westbound lanes. This night will have similar lane closures but the intermittent full shutdowns should be limited to the Westbound side of I-290.  Again, those full shutdowns will be between midnight and 5 a.m.

  • Tuesday 3/31 during the day the contractor will make preparations to mobilize a different crane to the east side of the bridge on Laurel St.

  • Tuesday night 3/31 the crane will be mobilized to the east side of the bridge so the bridge beams over I-290 Eastbound can start to be set. The two left lanes on I-290 Eastbound will be closed. Starting at midnight, there will be intermittent full closures on I-290 Eastbound as each bridge beam is picked up, set in place, and secured.  The intermittent full shutdowns will be implemented  by Massachusetts State Police. This work will run until 5 a.m. at which time I-290 traffic will be returned to normal.

  • Wednesday night 4/1 and Thursday night 4/2 the crane will set the remaining steel over I-290 Eastbound in a similar fashion with intermittent full shutdowns limited to between midnight and 5 a.m.

  • Friday morning 4/3 at approximately 7 a.m. the crane will be removed from Laurel St. At this time, Laurel St. will be re-opened to one-way (eastbound) traffic as is currently the case.
