Always lock the frame of your bike to the rack. If a bike is only locked to the rack by a wheel, a thief can simply remove the wheel and walk away with the rest of your bike.
A U-lock is the most secure type of lock for your bike. Cable locks can easily be cut and should only be used as a secondary lock to secure wheels.
Bike Rack Styles
There are many different styles of bike racks, however, they do not all provide the same functionality. A good bike rack should:
- Support an upright bike by providing two points of contact.
- Accommodate a variety of bike styles (cargo bikes, tandem, etc.).
- Allow locking of the bike frame and one wheel with a U-lock.
- Provide security and longevity features appropriate for the intended location.
- Be intuitive and user-friendly.
Two bike rack style meet all the performance criteria listed above: the Inverted-U (hoop) and Post-and-Ring (hitch) styles. These are the only bike racks approved for use in the public right of way in Worcester and are recommended for use on private property as well.
