WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester Fire Department shared an update Monday regarding a rail car derailment that took place Sunday:
At approximately 12:20 p.m. Sunday March 9, the Worcester Fire Department was dispatched to a hazardous materials incident at 640 Cambridge St. On arrival we found several rail cars derailed, with two overturned. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the rail cars contain ethanol. The product is contained to the cars with no observed leaks. We are currently awaiting P&W Railroad to upright the cars. This will require preparation of the site and the use of a crane. We are expecting this to occur Tuesday, March 11.
Upon derailing, the two cars contacted an adjacent building. An investigation of the building was conducted and there does not appear to be any structural damage. The power to the building has been disconnected as a precaution.
The Worcester Fire Department and Westborough Fire Department remain at the scene with their foam trailer crews as a precaution.
There is currently no threat to the community or surrounding area. The contents of the rail cars are contained to the cars.
