DPW, Worcester Public Schools to Partner for ’26 “Name A Snowplow” Contest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 10/5/2026 11:17 am

WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester Department of Public Works (DPW) and Worcester Public Schools (WPS) are partnering again for their annual “Name a Snowplow” contest to name four snowplow trucks for the 2026-2027 winter season.

WPS students in grades K-12 will submit entries to be voted on by the public to name trucks that plow main arterials in four different quadrants of the city. The contest serves as a celebration of winter and the creativity of Worcester’s young students.

“This has turned into one my favorite programs of the year,” said City Manager Eric D. Batista. “The creative names students come up with each year, and the public voting are fun engagements that resemble our civic process. But getting to visit each winning class after the contest and seeing the students interact with DPW staff and the trucks they’ve named is the best part.”

“We can't yet predict how much snow we'll get this winter, but we can count on our students providing some clever and creative snowplow names,” said Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Brian E. Allen. “This contest is a fun, memorable way for our students to embrace the cold, share their wit, and take pride in helping keep our city connected and moving.”

The contest will result in four more of the municipality’s most visible snowplows getting their own names to join 2hr Delay Destroyer, Sleetwood Mac, William Scrapespeare, and Clearopathra, and others, as they clear the snowy roads of Worcester.

The contest is open to all WPS classes in grades K-12. Submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2026. All entries that follow eligibility guidelines will be accepted as finalists. The public will then vote to determine four winners among all qualified entries. The winning classrooms will receive a visit from and photo op with their named truck, DPW swag, and recognition at a future City Council meeting.
