FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 6/26/2026 3:31 pm
WORCESTER, Mass. – City Manager Eric D. Batista announced Friday the appointment of Bruce R. Mendelsohn as the City of Worcester's Director of Veterans Services. Mendelsohn will lead the municipality’s Division of Veterans Services, which helps eligible Worcester veterans and their families access local, state, and federal benefits and services.
The Division administers Chapter 115 veterans' benefits on behalf of the Commonwealth, assists with benefits applications and referrals, and advocates for City of Worcester veterans and their family members seeking support. While the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides federal healthcare, disability compensation, pensions, and other federal benefits, the municipality’s Division of Veterans Services helps City of Worcester veterans navigate and access those programs while connecting them to additional state and local resources.
“Bruce's commitment to public service and his military service make him exceptionally well-qualified to lead our Veterans Services Division," said City Manager Eric D. Batista. “His leadership experience, dedication to community engagement, and passion for serving others will help ensure Worcester's veterans and their families continue to receive the support and recognition they deserve.”
“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to continue serving my fellow veterans and look forward to working with them, their families, community organizations, and City staff to ensure they get the recognition and assistance they earned,” said Mendelsohn.
Mendelsohn was Commissioned in 1990 as a Second Lieutenant through Fordham University Army ROTC. He served as a Platoon Leader with the 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea and an Executive Officer with the 8th U.S. Army in Germany before being honorably discharged. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne School, the 8th U.S. Army Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Warfare School, and the U.S. Army Adjutant General Officer Basic Course. He holds a B.A. in History from Vassar College and an M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. Mendelsohn previously worked for the MassHire Central Region Workforce Board.
