Officers Responding to ShotSpotter Activation Locate Suspects with Loaded Firearm

For Immediate Release: 3/31/2022 10:06 am

On Thursday, March 31, 2022 at approximately 12:30 AM officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 3 Breck Street. Upon arrival, officers began to search the area for potential victims or evidence of gunfire. Officers quickly noticed a Nissan Rouge stopped in the middle of the road in front of 3 Breck Street. Two officers approached the vehicle on foot. The operator of the vehicle was identified as 19-year-old Roy Diaz of Worcester. The passenger was identified as 19-year-old Michael Bell of Worcester. Both occupants appeared to be extremely nervous upon initial contact. Other units arrived on scene. The arriving officers located ballistic evidence (spent casings) as they investigated the scene. Due to the nature of the call, the actions of the occupants, and the recovery of ballistic evidence, the determination to remove Mr. Diaz and Mr. Bell from the vehicle was made. While Mr. Diaz was exiting the vehicle, Mr. Bell kept moving around in the car. An officer opened the passenger door and immediately observed a black magazine from underneath Mr. Bell’s right leg. The officer announced “gun” and attempted to gain control of the firearm. Officers struggled to place Mr. Bell in handcuffs. Officers were eventually able to apprehend Mr. Bell.

The Crime Scene Unit arrived on scene and collected the loaded firearm and casings. During an inventory of the vehicle, officers located marijuana in a large open bag.
Roy Diaz, 19, of 68 Everard Street, was charged with Improperly Storing a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card.

Michael Bell, 19, of 34 Shamrock Street, Worcester was charged with Improperly Storing a Firearm, Resisting Arrest, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, and Carrying a Firearm without a License and Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card.
