WORCESTER, Mass. – Starting Wednesday, June 28, Cambridge Street will be closed to through traffic between Chelsea Street and Canterbury Street for sewer main construction. Residents should expect traffic delays.
A detour will be set up and operated during normal working hours (Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and variable message boards will broadcast information about the detour. The detour will shift travel onto Canterbury Street to Hammond Street then onto Southbridge Street, or the reverse depending on direction. Cambridge Street will be opened to traffic during non-work hours. Cambridge Street will remain accessible to all residents and local traffic during construction. The sidewalk along the southern side of Cambridge Street will also remain open during construction.
Construction is expected to take three to four weeks and is part of the “Lower Cambridge Street Sewer Rehabilitation and Inflow/Infiltration Removal” project, which will reduce the risk of structural failure and reduce groundwater infiltration into the wastewater system. The project will repair identified sewer defects and reduce the likelihood of sewer collapses, blockages, basement backups, and sanitary sewer overflows.
This project will improve the resiliency of the sewer system in the area, protect the City’s infrastructure and improve sewer service to area businesses and residences. This ARPA-funded project was identified as a priority in the City’s Integrated Water Resources Management Plan.
