SENIOR ACCOUNT CLERK
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Senior Account Clerk for the Utility Billing Office within the Department of Public Works and Parks. Under the direction of the Utility Billing Manager, the Senior Account Clerk is responsible for performing critical activities to prepare, process, and maintain water usage and water bills. Responsibilities include daily phone contact with water and sewer customers regarding their billing questions and concerns; direct involvement with The Treasurer’s Office in regard to payments; and outreach to customers in the form of call backs, emails and/or fax requests.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Manage and maintain water billing information for residential and commercial accounts
  • Prepare Water and Sewer billing data for quarterly or monthly billing/mailing
  • Prepare reports and summaries as needed
  • Perform account reconciliation
  • Maintain data quality in the water billing databases by entering modifying and verifying customer billing information

SECONDARY ELEMENTS:

  • Sort and distribute documents as needed
  • Maintain accurate files of billing or other information
  • Respond to resident calls to answer questions and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Attend to other general office duties as needed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of data processing procedures
  • Knowledge of general office practices
  • Knowledge of basic business accounting billing processes
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer proficiency, including the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work with and preserve confidential files/material
  • Ability to use digital documents and filing systems
  • Ability to learn, understand, and follow written/verbal policies, procedures, and instructions
  • Ability to quickly learn relevant information and systems
  • Ability to solve problems according to written instructions of specifications
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain professionalism with challenging customers

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with financial information such as billing, collections, payable/receivables, etc.
  • Experience in a professional environment in a clerical role
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree in Business, Finance, or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience with Utility Billing
  • Two (2) years of customer service experience in an office environment
  • One (1) year of experience using billing software

SALARY RANGE: $21.18 - $25.51 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
