ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF SEASONAL MAINTENANCE
(PARKS STEWARD PROGRAM)
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for an Assistant Director of Seasonal Maintenance for the Parks Division within the Department of Public Works and Parks. Under the direction of the Director of Seasonal Maintenance, the position is responsible for assisting with supervising, planning, and implementing comprehensive park maintenance for the community. The employee will perform work with the seasonal crew supervisors and maintenance workers to ensure assigned work details are being performed and safety protocols are followed.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Assist Director with supervision and leadership of seasonal park maintenance staff. Work is performed in accordance with standard park maintenance practices and procedures
  • Perform general landscaping duties and removal of trash from assigned areas
  • Perform work independently and supervise small groups of employees
  • Complete weekly time sheets, work details, and record keeping
  • Operate small machine equipment (lawn mowers, trimmers, & leaf blowers)
  • Instruct seasonal crew supervisors and maintenance workers in proper operation of equipment
  • Perform work in accordance with City of Worcester standard park/cemetery maintenance practices & procedures
  • Respond appropriately to situations requiring first-aid
  • Perform manual tasks requiring some physical exertion

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to interact with patrons and the general public in a proper and professional manner
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations
  • Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical exertion
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work within wooded areas, on trails and in minimally accessible areas
  • Ability to work up to thirty-five (35) hours per week

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (1) years of experience in a supervisory role with general maintenance or landscaping projects
  • One (1) year of experience in custodial work
  • Basic administrative abilities
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree in a related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in general maintenance and/or landscaping
  • Three (3) years of experience in a supervisory role with general maintenance or landscaping projects
  • Experience working with hand- held radios and operating communication systems
  • Basic administrative abilities to write Incident and Injury
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR/AED

SALARY: $18.00 hourly, seasonal, non-benefitted
