The City of Worcester is seeking three (3) attorneys to join the fast-paced, high-volume collaborative and congenial Law Department as full-time Assistant City Solicitors to provide competent and timely legal services, advice, and recommendations to the City Manager, City Council and the City’s officers, employees, boards and commissions. One position is for a litigation attorney, another is a non-litigation position, and the third position is a combination of both.
The litigation position entails advocating on behalf of the City in civil litigation matters in state and federal courts and includes, but is not limited to conducting legal research, drafting pleadings, motions, memoranda, and outlines of questioning and arguments for hearings and trials in court and administrative agencies. The non-litigation position renders legal opinions to City officers, departments, boards, and commissions, prepares responses to public records requests, drafts legal documents such as ordinances, legislative acts, and the review/drafting of contracts. The third position is predominantly non-litigation having some crossover to litigation matters, with a possible emphasis on municipal finance and Appellate Tax Board work. Applicants may, but are not required to indicate a preference when applying. These are flexibly staffed positions, with incumbents assigned to the appropriate level based on overall related legal experience and demonstrated proficiency in a local government setting. While expertise may be gained in a specialized area of municipal law, the incumbent assumes responsibility for legal matters in any area as assigned by the City Solicitor.
