The Worcester Public Library seeks a Public Service Librarian. This position is a professional position under the general direction of the Public Services Coordinator and will assist with all aspects of public services in a busy department, including providing customer assistance at various service points. The Public Services Librarian provides professional reference and readers’ advisory services and maintains a working knowledge of library resources. This position participates in development of adult collections, programming, outreach, and information and digital literacy instruction. Work will include evening and weekend assignments, and working at other locations.

Qualified applicants will have knowledge of search skills using paper and electronic resources; prior experience working with diverse populations in an urban community; excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; possess a strong commitment to consistent excellent customer service to a diverse population in an urban environment; hold a high level of professionalism and commitment to the organization; embrace opportunities to learn in a fast-paced changing environment; & be proficient in current and emerging technologies. Additionally, the successful applicant will have the ability to initiate, organize, and self-direct work responsibility under moderate supervision; to communicate with all staff about concepts, ideas, and requirements; to work independently and as part of a team; to create positive working relationships with a diverse staff; to learn and use library technologies; to maintain patron confidentiality; to reach and retrieve books at high and low shelf heights; to stand and or sit for prolonged periods of time; to perform bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, and twisting; to perform repetitive hand and arm motions for prolonged periods of time; and to move or lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Masters of Library Science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association or approved by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners
  • Ability to successfully pass CORI/SORI
  • Reliable transportation to travel between required locations


  • Prior customer service experience in a professional work environment

SALARY RANGE: $23.63 - $33.85 hourly, full-time
