On June 25th 2022 at about 2:50 AM, Worcester Police officers were dispatched to the area of Fox St for a ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, officers located a motor vehicle that had been involved in a crash, and evidence that shots had been fired. The motor vehicle was unoccupied and registered to a Chandler St address.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, and officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and crossing over the center line on Chandler St. The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle briefly sped away before two males jumped out and began to sprint in opposite directions. The officer followed one of the men to the driveway of a Preston St address, which was marked “No Trespassing.” During the foot pursuit, the officer noticed that this man was continually grabbing something in his waistband.
Officers caught up with one of the men, identified as James Cabrera, nineteen-years-old of Trowbridge Circuit, near the rear of Jacob Hiatt School. He was taken to the ground and placed in handcuffs. Officers located a hard metal object in his waistband, which they removed. It turned out to be a handgun, and Mr. Cabrera did not have a license to carry firearms. He is charged with Carrying a Firearm without a License, Resisting Arrest, and Trespassing.
