Statement from Chief Steven M. Sargent on the Events in Minnesota
Dear Community Members:
I want you to know that I share the same emotions as you when reading the news coming out of Minnesota –heartbreak, anger, disgust and profound disappointment.
I have watched the disturbing video and news reports. The actions of the officers in Minnesota are completely unacceptable and against the oath we have taken to protect and serve. It is a disgusting abuse of power and a disregard for human life.
Although this tragic event happened thousands of miles away, it has the potential to impact us here and damage the relationships that we have built. I don’t want this dark moment in time to tarnish the reputation of all police officers or undermine the hard work of the men and women of the Worcester Police Department.
Our officers have worked tirelessly to establish community-police partnerships and to build trust through various efforts. Community policing is a core element of our policing philosophy and it has helped us to make great strides when it comes to engaging the public and building positive relationships.
We do not want to take a step back or slow down our progress. There is more work to be done and together through team work we can solve problems and prevent any issues from reoccurring.
Now more than ever, it is critical that we work with the community. I believe that the strong connections our officers have made in our neighborhoods and the trust they have built will allow us to overcome…Together.
We take pride in our work and are dedicated and committed to protecting and serving the City of Worcester.
Steven M. Sargent
Chief of Police
