COMMUNITY BRANCH SERVICES LIBRARY ASSISTANT

The Worcester Public Library is seeking a Community Branch Services Library Assistant (Librarian, Grade 2). The Library Assistant is a paraprofessional position, reporting to the Community Branch Services Supervisor and under the overall direction of the Community Services Coordinator. This position assists with planning and organizing activities; performs circulation and clerical/administrative work; assists patrons in the use of library services, facilities and equipment; and interprets library policies to patrons. This position is involved in all operations related to circulation of library materials while delivering an excellent customer service experience. The person in this position is the liaison with the Main Library Circulation Department and C/W MARS, and supervises operations in the Community Branch Services Supervisor’s absence. Work will include evenings, weekends and assignments in other departments and locations, including Mobile services vehicles.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate with professional and paraprofessional staff about concepts, ideas, and requirements.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize work effectively.
  • Computer proficiency including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; demonstrated proficiency in current and emerging library technologies; ability to learn and use library technologies.
  • Ability to embrace opportunities to learn in a fast-paced changing environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, which may include community outreach.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse, multicultural community, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to provide information and guidance clearly, courteously and pleasantly to patrons; ability to resolve conflicts with staff and patrons.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to be flexible and to handle varying work assignments.
  • Physical ability to push book carts and bins loaded with library materials, reach and retrieve books at high and low shelf heights, stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time, perform bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, and twisting; perform repetitive hand and arm motions for prolonged periods of time; and to move or lift up to 50 lbs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of community public service work, such as library, day care center, book store, or equivalent
  • Ability to successfully pass CORI/SORI
  • Reliable transportation to travel between locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of supervisory experience in a youth setting

SALARY RANGE: $19.26 - $23.10 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
