GREEN HILL FARM SUPERVISOR & CURATOR
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The Department of Public Works & Parks is seeking a full-time Supervisor/Curator to oversee and manage Worcester’s Green Hill Park Farm. The farm has hoofed animals and an assortment of foul and pigs. This position develops short-term and long-term objectives and strategies regarding the overall animal collection and organization. The Supervisor/Curator is responsible for ensuring that the facility meets all regulatory requirements, including USDA guidelines, and will obtain and maintain any necessary permits. The regular work schedule for this position will require the candidate to be available to consistently work weekends and holidays.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to create and deliver quality educational programs for zoo visitors and keep guests and staff safe while they are on the premises.
  • Ability to consistently interact in a courteous and professional manner with staff and visitors at all times.
  • Ability to develop, present, and take comment for public meetings on Green Hill Farm and related topics.
  • Practical understanding of animal behavior and be able to work with live animals safely while closely observing their conditions and their enclosures.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to assist in managing, supervising and preparing the annual budget for the Green Hill Farm.
  • Ability to be reliable and capable of dealing with emergencies, calmly and efficiently.
  • Ability to report abnormal behavior and problems to area supervisors and veterinarian without delay.
  • Ability to monitor the health of the animals on a daily basis by observing eating habits, general activity, behavior, appearance with others, etc.
  • Ability to maintain a daily keeper log and individual care charts; and to move and manipulate heavy food items/equipment, including hoses, bales of hay, assorted farm equipment, etc.
  • Ability to prepare and distribute animal diets.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences, Biology, Zoology, or related field;
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience working in a zoo and/or animal farm operation; OR,
    • An equivalent combination of education & experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the required duties of the position will be considered in lieu of the above mentioned requirements.
  • Familiarization with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Prior experience in budgeting and customer service/constituent response.
  • Ability to work weekends and Holidays.
  • Successfully pass CORI and SORI check.
  • Valid Driver’s License (must maintain for length of employment).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Animal Science, Biology, Zoology, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience working in a zoo/animal farm operation.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED.

SALARY RANGE: $63,657 - $83,402 annually, full-time, exempt, with an excellent benefits package.
