Indian Lake Refill Happening This Week

For Immediate Release: 3/8/2022 9:33 am

The City of Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks will close the outlet valve and replace the flash boards at the Indian Lake spillway on or around March 10th so as to begin refilling the lake, thereby ending the winter drawdown. The water level will be allowed to rise over the next two weeks until it reaches pre-drawdown levels.

Water level drawdowns are one of several lake management practices used to reduce the density of invasive aquatic plants, specifically Eurasian milfoil, by exposing them to the winter elements. You can learn more about how drawdowns work on the Blue Space Minute.

While previously the drawdown was an annual event, due to the diversification of invasive plant management techniques at the Lake, there is no drawdown planned for the winter of 2022/23. To learn more about the lake management plan, please visit http://www.worcesterma.gov/sustainability-resilience/recreational-waters.

The drawdown is coordinated with the Indian lake Watershed Association and has been approved by the Worcester Conservation Commission. Please feel free to reach out to DSR’s Lakes and Ponds Program for more information at GreenWorcester@worcesterma.gov.
