Worcester, MA (December 7, 2017) - On December 6, 2017, at approximately 11:00 PM, Worcester Police responded to St. Joseph’s church located at 35 Hamilton Street for a reported alarm call.
Officers arrived at the scene and began checking on the exterior doors. Officers noticed that the front doors were unsecured and damaged. Officers and a K-9 unit entered the church and began searching inside. Within a few minutes K-9 Elvis started barking at one of the pews. At the same time one of the officers yelled out that Elvis located a male hiding under the pew.
The male was removed from the pew and identified as Mark Belinskas, 45-years-old of 10 Duncannon Avenue. Mr. Belinskas could not provide a legitimate reason for being inside of the church. Mr. Belinskas was placed under arrest and charged with Breaking and Entering in a Building in the Nighttime and Malicious Destruction of Property.
Officers continued searching the rest of the church for other possible suspects. The search provided negative results. The church custodian arrived at the scene and it appeared that nothing was missing. The custodian told the officers that the front doors had no prior damage when he secured the building for the night. It appeared that Mr. Belinskas damaged the doors by forcing his way in.
Mr. Belinskas will be arraigned today at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
