Worcester, MA (April 6, 2017) - On Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at approximately 5:40 PM, members of the Worcester Police Gang Unit were on patrol in the area of 30 Chandler Street. At this time the officers observed a male known to them as Peter Santos, 37-years-old of 139 Lawrence Street, Clinton, operate a silver Toyota past them. Mr. Santos was observed pulling into the lot of 30 Chandler Street and then onto Irving Street. Officers are familiar with Santos and knew that he had a revoked driver’s license.
The gang officers followed the Toyota and activated their emergency lights and signaled Mr. Santos to stop. Ms. Santos began to slow down but did not stop. The vehicle turned right onto Wellington Street and eventually stopped just prior to Jacques Avenue.
Officers approached the vehicle. Mr. Santos refused to roll down his window. At this time officers attempted to open the driver’s door. Mr. Santos stepped on the accelerator and drove off at a high rate of speed. One of the officers had his hand inside the door handle when the car speed off, as result the officer was slammed against the rear quarter panel with his knees.
Officers rushed back to their cruiser and began to follow Mr. Santos. Mr. Santos was driving very erratic and at a high rate of speed. The officers lost contact with the vehicle. Shortly afterwards a call came over the police radio of a hit and run accident that occurred in the area of 121 Russell Street. The suspect vehicle was the same vehicle that Mr. Santos was operating.
Numerous undercover gang and vice officers searched the area for the Santos vehicle. After a while one of the vice officers came upon the vehicle which was parked and unoccupied behind 39-41 Williams Street. Officers set up surveillance near the vehicle.
Mr. Santos was observed returning to the Toyota. Vice officers immediately approached Mr. Santos and placed him under arrest. A search of Mr. Santos produced a double edged knife. Within a few minutes the suspect’s brother arrived to pick up Mr. Santos. The brother was identified as Luis Santos, 31-years-old of 22 Wardwell Court, Southbridge. Luis informed the officers that he was there to pick up his brother. After a brief conversation it was discovered that Luis had in his possession 5 rounds .38 SPL ammunition. Luis did not possess a license to carry nor did he have and FID card.
Luis Santos was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card.
Peter Santos was charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Resisting Arrest, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, Operating a MV with a Revoked License, Operating a MV so as to Endanger, Failure to Stop for Police and Possession of Class E Substance with the Intent to Distribute.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Prior to tow police conducted an inventory search. Inside the Toyota officers discovered 244 Gabapenten pills, a Class E substance.
Both men will be arraigned today at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
