Worcester, MA (October 9, 2017) - On Sunday, October 8, 2017, at approximately 5:07 PM, Worcester Police responded to an accident that occurred on Southbridge Street at Hammond Street. The crash involved a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2013 Kia Soul.
Arriving officers observed that the operator of the Kia, a 50-year-old Worcester man, was suffering from a serious head injury. The victim was treated at the scene by Worcester EMS and transported to a local hospital for treatment. A passenger in the Kia, a 46-year-old male from Boca Raton, Florida, received minor injuries and was also transported to a local hospital for observation.
The driver of the Jeep, a 43-year-old female Worcester resident, was also suffering from head and back pain. The second driver was also transported to a nearby hospital for observation.
Due to the nature of the accident, the WPD Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the Jeep was traveling south on Southbridge Street. At the same time the Jeep was turning left onto Southbridge Street, coming from the east bound lane of Hammond Street. Witnesses indicated that the Jeep did not stop for the red light and crashed into the Kia as it was turning onto Southbridge Street.
Recon investigators went to the hospital to check on the victim. The operator of the Jeep and the passenger of the Kia had minor injuries and were released after treatment. The operator of the Kia received treatment for his head injury and is in good condition.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and will have a full mechanical inspection performed by investigators. No citations have been issued at this time until as the investigation is still in the early stages.
