Worcester, MA (July 3, 2012) - On Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at approximately 9:42 PM Worcester Police responded to the Walgreens parking lot located at 220 Grafton Street for a report of a shooting. Upon the officers' arrival they observed a 33 year old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The male was deceased as officers arrived on scene. The incident occurred in front of a large crowd who had gathered at the scene to watch the fireworks display. In the crowd were numerous children. No other injuries were reported.
The Worcester Police Detective Bureau along with the Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit arrived and secured the scene. Numerous people were interviewed at the scene and several were transported back to police headquarters. The crime scene is being processed for evidence.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was in the area to watch the fireworks. The parking lot was crowded with people. A male suspect walked up from behind the victim and fired at the victim. Many people nearby began to panic and run from the scene. The victim fell to the ground and died shortly thereafter. The male suspect was last seen running east on Grafton Street.
To date, there are conflicting reports on the suspect’s physical description. There is also conflicting reports as to how many shots were fired.
Investigators are currently canvassing the area, processing the scene and conducting interviews. It is unknown at this time what the circumstances were leading up to the shooting. Investigators will be working through the evening in an attempt to identify the suspect and the motive to this incident.
