Worcester, MA (February 7, 2012) - On Monday, February 6, 2012 at approximately 6:46 PM Worcester Police responded to the front of Compare Foods located at 664 Main Street for a report of a female who had been shot. Upon arrival, a female victim was observed lying on the sidewalk suffering from two gun shot wounds to the head. The victim, identified as Belinda Torres, 40 years old of Worcester was transported to U-Mass Hospital (university campus) and pronounced dead at approximately 7:15 PM.
Witnesses at the scene informed police that a male suspect waited outside Compare Foods for the victim and as she walked out of the store he shot her two times. A physical description of the suspect was provided and witnesses stated he was seen entering an apartment building at 1 Sycamore Street following the shooting. Police immediately surrounded the building and activated WPD S.W.A.T. to respond.
WPD Detectives discovered that the victim’s ex-boyfriend, 48 year old Jose Soto, resides at 1 Sycamore Street, apartment 18. Mr. Soto’s physical description is similar to the description of the shooter provided by witnesses. The victim also has an active restraining out against Mr. Soto.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for Soto’s apartment. At approximately 10:45 PM Worcester Police S.W.A.T. team made entry into the suspects apartment. Mr. Soto was discovered deceased within the apartment having suffered an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to his head. A weapon was found nearby the suspect’s body. The Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit was called to the apartment to process the scene. Mr. Soto’s body was removed at approximately 1:30 AM on February 7, 2012 and taken to a nearby funeral home.
Investigators continue to investigate this incident. The families of the victim and Mr. Soto were recently notified.
