Worcester, MA (March 7, 2012) - On Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at approximately 1:00 PM Worcester Police working the foot beat detail in the Main South area were sent to 701 Main Street to meet with staff members with regard to a past assault and robbery. Upon the officers' arrival they met with a 56 year old female victim. The victim informed the officers that she was assaulted by a male on 02/28/2012 and robbed of her money. The victim stated that the male suspect responsible for the robbery was now staying in the shelter at 701 Main Street.
The victim stated that on the 28th of February she was in the shelter counting some money when she looked over and noticed that a man was watching her. The victim stated that she left the shelter after that and walked to a nearby business on Main Street. The victim stated that she stayed inside the business for a short while and then exited the premises at approximately 4:30 PM. As she started walking on Main Street she was grabbed from behind by a male who pushed her head against the side of a brick building. As she was being assaulted, the victim was able to turn her head and noticed that the male attacking her was the same male in the shelter watching her count her money. During the assault the male punched her in the face and pushed her head against the wall a second time. The male was yelling at her to give him the money. The male reached into her coat pocket and took her cash and fled on foot.
After the attack the victim went back to the shelter and informed the staff. The staff members had a name of the suspect and showed a picture to the victim. She was then able to identify the male who robbed her.
On March 7, 2012 the victim explained that she received information that the suspect was at the shelter again. The victim went to the shelter and informed the staff that the suspect was in the building. The victim searched the floors and located the suspect on the fourth floor of the shelter. She then went back to the staff and confirmed the sighting; the staff then contacted police. The victim provided a detailed physical description of the suspect. Officers located the male and placed him under arrest. He was identified as James Dudley, 49 years old of 701 Main Street. Mr. Dudley was charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Unarmed Robbery. Dudley will be arraigned at the Worcester County District Court House on Thursday, March 8, 2012.
