Worcester, MA (July 21, 2017) – On Friday, July 21, 2017, members of the WPD Vice Squad were conducting undercover surveillance at Walgreen’s located at 220 Grafton Street. One of the undercover officers was located in the parking lot in an unmarked motor vehicle. The officer observed a male looking around while using his phone. At one point the male was directly in front of the unmarked vehicle when he pulled out a crack pipe, worked on it for a moment and then put it back in his pocket. The man did not load the pipe with any substance.
A few moments later a male, later identified as Kevinmax Kihara, 20-years-old of 52 Penn Avenue, entered the Walgreen’s parking lot from Penn Avenue. Mr. Kihara met up with the male and walked across the lot to Barclay Street. It was there that the officer observed an open air hand to hand drug transaction take place. After the transaction the two separated.
Undercover officers split up and followed the two men. Mr. Kihara was seen walking back to 52 Penn Avenue and enter the building. Meanwhile officers followed the other male to Grafton and Mendon Street. The male was stopped there by the officers. The male was in possession of a small amount of marijuana. Officers were able to check the man’s phone and discovered a recent text that had the man ordering marijuana and crack cocaine from the last person he texted. Officers texted that person and ordered $40 worth of crack cocaine. The person responded with Walgreen’s in 3 minutes.
Officers watching Mr. Kihara’s residence observed him exiting the building and walking towards Walgreen’s parking lot. Officers quickly surrounded him. Mr. Kihara discarded an item. Officers retrieved the item. The item turned out to be $40 worth of crack cocaine.
Officers explained to Mr. Kihara what they had been observing. He was advised by the officers that they were going to obtain a search warrant for his residence. Mr. Kihara wanted to spare his family the inconvenience and decided to tell them where the rest of his stash was located. Mr. Kihara consented for the officers to retrieve the rest of the drugs from his room.
Officers were able to retrieve an additional 2.7 grams of crack cocaine, a digital scale, a cell phone and crib notes from his room.
Mr. Kihara was charged with Possession of Class B Substance with the Intent to Distribute.
Mr. Kihara will be arraigned on Monday, July 24, 2017 at the Worcester County District Courthouse.
