Update: Driver Of The Vehicle Involved In Webster Plaza Crash Was Placed Under Arrest

Worcester, MA (August 28, 2013) - Worcester Police continue to investigate an accident that occurred at 68 Stafford Street (Webster Square Plaza).  The vehicle crashed into a concrete pillar in the plaza at approximately 9:40 A.M.  A Worcester Police Sergeant was in the area working a detail and was alerted about the accident. 

The sergeant and a citizen went to assist the driver involved in the motor vehicle accident. While the sergeant and citizen attempted to assist, the driver accelerated.  The sergeant and citizen were injured when the vehicle accelerated and crashed into the building.  There was structural damage to two stores in the plaza.  

Three people (including the driver) were transported local hospitals to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.        

Officers interviewed witnesses and recovered evidence at the scene.  As a result of the investigation, the driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest.

Ryan Hehir, 20, of 1 Rice Avenue, Shrewsbury, MA was charged with Failure to Stay Within One Lane, Operating Negligent so as to Endanger, Operating Under the Influence of Narcotics and Operating Under the Influence of Narcotics Causing Injury with Negligence.

The sergeant has been released from the hospital.  He was treated for an ankle injury. The citizen injured during the accident is currently being treated for non-life threatening leg injuries.

Mr. Hehir was released from the hospital.  He will be arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse tomorrow.
