Two Home Invasion Suspects Arrested After Firing Gun at Police

Worcester, MA (August 30, 2013) - On Thursday, August 29, 2013 at approximately 11:07 PM, Worcester Police responded to 2 Cohasset Street for a report of a home invasion. Officers arriving at the scene observed through a window, two masked men armed with handguns inside the first floor apartment. The responding officers quickly set up a perimeter and requested additional police assistance.

Minutes later, numerous officers were at the scene and provided cover to the apartment building. At this time the officers heard the sounds of a window breaking on the left side of the building followed by several gunshots as the two males jumped through the window. Police observed the muzzle flash of the gun and the males jumping out of the window just as the shots were fired. No officers were hit or injured.

The male suspects began to run towards the front of the apartment building. Police apprehended Devon McLeod, 29-years-old of 38 Berkmans Street, Worcester. The second suspect, later identified as Kasiem Smith, 18-years-old of 109 Ingleside Avenue, Worcester, began to run from the officers but was subsequently apprehended a short distance away.  Police were able to apprehend him when he attempted to hide in a common hallway of a nearby apartment building.

A search of Mr. McCleod produced two clear baggies of marijuana and $2,050 in cash. A gun was located just below the window that the men had jumped out of.

The Worcester Police S.W.A.T. team arrived along with numerous other officers from various divisions. There were several occupants within the first floor apartment refusing to exit at the request of the police. Police worked to determine if there were additional suspects in the dwelling or if this was a possible hostage situation. Detectives at the scene eventually made contact with the occupants. Four occupants within the apartment walked out and met with police.

Officers entered the apartment and conducted a protective sweep for additional suspects and searched for potential victims. During the search, officers observed a large amount of marijuana located inside the apartment. A second gun was discovered inside the apartment which appeared to have been recently discarded.

Investigators interviewed the occupants of the apartment. As a result of evidence discovered at the scene, Jonathan Ren, 20-years-old of 2 Cohasset Street was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Class D Substance with the Intent to Distribute.

Mr. McLeod and Mr. Smith were each charged with 4 counts of Home Invasion, 4 counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Armed Robbery, 4 counts of Armed Assault with Intent to Murder, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Carrying a Firearm without a License and Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License. Mr. McLeod was additionally charged with Possession of Class D Substance with the Intent to Distribute.

Mr. McLeod and Mr. Smith are known gang members here in the city. All three males arrested will be arraigned today at the Worcester County District Courthouse.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the victim’s apartment and worked throughout the night gathering evidence. Investigation is ongoing; additional charges may follow. There were no injuries reported.
