Worcester, MA (April 15, 2013) - On Monday April 15, 2013 at approximately 12:00 AM, Worcester Police responded to a serious two car accident at 529 Southwest Cutoff, the intersection of Greenwood Street and Route 20. Upon the officers arrival they observed a Honda Civic with extensive driver’s side damage facing westbound in the eastbound lane. Next to the Honda were two females lying in the road. Both females appeared to have serious injuries as they were ejected from the rear window of the Honda. One female, 18-years-old, was unresponsive while the other female, 20-years-old, was conscious but seriously hurt. The driver of the Honda received minor injuries while the front passenger was unhurt.
Police met with the 19-year-old male operator of the second vehicle. The male operator, who was unhurt, stated that he was operating his Chevrolet Trail Blazer eastbound on Route 20 when the Honda came out of Greenwood Street. The crash occurred when the driver of the Honda attempted to enter the McDonald’s Restaurant parking lot. The Honda started to cross Route 20, entered the Chevrolet’s travel lane and collided.
Witnesses at the scene provided similar accounts with regard to the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The injured females were transported to a nearby hospital. The 18-year-old female is in critical condition with a head injury while the 20-year-old female is in serious condition with multiple broken bones and internal injuries. The driver, identified as Courtney Collins, 17-years-old of 45 Memorial Drive, Shrewsbury, received minor cuts.
Ms. Collins was placed under arrest at the hospital by Worcester Police traffic investigators. Ms. Collins was charged with Failure to Yield at an Intersection, Operating a MV so as to Endanger and Operating a MV under the Influence of Alcohol.
This investigation is ongoing as investigators obtain a search warrant to check on the mechanical components of the Honda, along with gathering evidence and obtaining witness statements.
Ms. Collins will be arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.
