Worcester, MA (August 26, 2010) - On Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at approximately 5:26 PM Worcester Police Officers Kyle Cortis and Steven Mitchell were on routine patrol in the Main South neighborhood when they came upon a suspect vehicle on Wellington Street which matched the description broadcasted earlier in their shift to be on the look out. This vehicle was being operated by an individual wanted with regard to the Mendon Street shooting which occurred on 08/24/2010.

The officers signaled the vehicle to stop and as a result the suspect exited the vehicle and led the officers on an intensive foot chase. The suspect was subsequently apprehended as he tried to hide; he was arrested and transported to the station.

The suspect has been identified as Jose Morales, 32 years old of 2 Boardman Street, Worcester. He is being charged with Discharging a Firearm Within 500' of a Dwelling, Assault and Battery With a Dangerous Weapon, Armed Assault With Intent to Murder, Carrying a Loaded Firearm Without a License, Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition Without and FID Card and Carrying a Firearm Without a License. There will also be a pending parole violation hearing as the suspect is on parole for a 1999 shooting incident which occurred in Great Brook Valley. In that incident the victim was shot and killed.

The victim in yesterday's shooting is currently listed in serious condition; he had undergone emergency surgery last evening for a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. This investigation is still active as Detectives continue to interview witnesses.

Mr. Morales will be arraigned at the Worcester County District Courthouse on Thursday, August 26, 2010.
