Stolen Handgun Discovered in Beacon St Motor Vehicle Stop

Worcester, MA (August 2, 2017) – On Wednesday August 2nd at about 11:45 PM, Worcester police were on patrol in the area of Beacon St. An officer observed a blue Hyundai Sonata fail to stop at the stop sign at the corner of Beacon and Kilby St. The officer activated his blue lights and initiated a motor vehicle stop in front of 20 Kilby St.

As the officer approached the vehicle, he saw that the Hyundai had three occupants, who all appeared to be extremely nervous and were behaving strangely.  The front passenger kept looking back at the officer in a nervous manner, and the driver’s hands were shaking as he turned over his license and registration. Because the officer was outnumbered and felt a heightened awareness of danger due to the strange behavior of the vehicle occupants, he went back to his cruiser until backup arrived.

When other officers arrived, they approached the vehicle. The rear passenger appeared to be frantically trying to hide something as the officers approached. All three occupants were removed from the vehicle so that a frisk could be conducted. Officers discovered a loaded handgun that was stolen from Westford, MA.  None of the males had a license to carry a firearm.

The driver, Steven Avila, thirty-four-years-old of 143 Lincoln St, was charged with, Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm (Loaded), Possession of Ammunition without FID, Receiving Stolen Property, Improper Storage of a Firearm, and a Stop Sign Violation. The two passengers were Fellix Rivera, forty-three-years-old of 50 Irving St #3, and Eddyson Diaz-Almeida, twenty-four-years-old of 110 Endicott St #2, were both charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm (Loaded), Possession of Ammunition without FID, Receiving Stolen Property, Improper Storage of a Firearm. They were all placed under arrest and will be arraigned in Worcester District Court.
