Worcester, MA (June 24, 2017) – On Saturday, June 24th 2017, at about 11:30 AM, officers were dispatched to the corner of Belmont and Plantation St for a report of a serious pedestrian accident. Officers observed the twenty-one-year-old male victim in the road when they arrived, and spoke with the operator of the vehicle that struck him and other witnesses. Paramedics were in the area and were on scene almost immediately after the accident occurred.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the male was jogging southeast on Belmont St when he approached the crosswalk at the intersection of Belmont at Plantation St. The traffic light was green, and a motorist in the right lane of Plantation St southbound saw him approaching the crosswalk and stopped to let him cross. A separate motorist driving a Nissan Murano in the middle lane of Plantation St southbound did not see him, and struck him as he crossed the intersection in the crosswalk. The male was transported to the hospital for head trauma and a laceration to his leg. He is currently in critical but stable condition. WPD Crime Scene Unit and Crash Reconstruction Team responded and are investigating further.
