Worcester, MA (June 17, 2011) - On Friday, June 17, 2011 at approximately 3:10 AM Worcester Police responded to the Hadwen Market located at 256 Webster Street for a reported commercial alarm call. In addition to the alarm call, witnesses had called the police and informed the dispatchers that they could observe individuals entering the business through a side door of the building. Officers arriving first at the scene were able to observe a smashed out door and a male in the parking lot running away from the store while carrying what appeared to be a safe. Arriving officers quickly gave chase after the male. When the male realized that he was being pursued by the police he dropped the safe and continued to run off into the nearby woods. Other officers at the scene observed a second suspect running on Boyce Street and jump into a parked car and drive off heading into the town of Auburn. The vehicle's description along with the driver's physical description were put out to surrounding police units.
Officers continued to pursue the first suspect on foot and he was subsequently apprehended on Clover Street. This male was identified as Krystian Gubernat, 21 years old of 20 Wabash Avenue, Worcester.
Police secured the market and waited for the arrival of the Massachusetts Police K-9 Unit where the dog tracked the path of the suspects. As a result, additional physical evidence was obtained. Officers contacted the store owner who arrived at the scene and secured the premises. Officers searched the store for additional suspects and evidence. As a result, items were recovered which were apparently used to force their way into the building. The Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit responded and processed all evidence at the scene.
Mr. Gubernat was charged with Willful and Malicious Vandalizing and Defacing Property, Malicious Destruction of Property Over the Value of $250.00, Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime With the Intent to Commit a Felony, Breaking Into a Safe, Larceny Over the Value of $250.00, Possession of a Burglarious Instrument, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct and Disturbing the Peace.
