Worcester, MA (September 8, 2011) - On Friday, September 2, 2011 at approximately 6:00 PM the Worcester Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to 413 Park Avenue with regard to an automobile accident involving a male in a wheel chair. According to the preliminary accident report, the male operator of a 2005 Nissan SUV was traveling north on Park Avenue when he approached the intersection of Park Avenue and May Street. The operator, Nicholas Russell, 23 years old of Wilbraham, MA, was coming to a stop for the red light. While stopped the vehicle slowly rolled forward and struck a 67 year old male who was in his motorized wheel chair, crossing the street. Although the vehicle was not traveling at any significant speed the force was great enough to knock the male over onto his side striking the asphalt with his head. The male received a slight injury to his head and he was transported to UMass Hospital (university campus) where he was treated and released. The wheel chair received little damage and the vehicle received no damage.
The investigation revealed that the operator of the vehicle was adjusting his radio while at the stop light and did not realize that he was rolling forward and into the wheel chair. As a result of the investigation, Mr. Russell was cited for Failing to Yield to a Pedestrian in the Roadway and Failing to Use Care in Starting and Stopping.
