Man Assaults 4 People with Machete

Worcester, MA (August 24, 2010) - On August 23, 2010 at 12:05 AM Worcester Police responded to 10 May Street for a reported breaking and entering in progress. Responding officers were informed that the male breaking into the building was carrying a machete. This structure is a vacant multi-story building which is currently boarded up.

Upon the officers' arrival they spoke with a male who identified himself as the owner's son; this male stated he and three other witnesses observed the suspect exit the building and he then assaulted the four with the machete. The four were trying to detain the suspect until the arrival of police but he began to wave the weapon at the witnesses. At this time the suspect ran up Kingsbury Street towards Queen Street.

Responding officers searched the area and the male was located in the area of 33 Queen Street. The male, identified as Michael Wright, 52 years old of 27 Hollywood Street, was observed by the officers holding a machete. At gun point, the officers gave numerous verbal commands to drop the weapon; the suspect finally complied and dropped the weapon. A search of Mr. Wright also discovered a pocket knife along with a screwdriver in his possession.

The four victims were transported to the location of 33 Queen Street and they all positively identified Mr. Wright as the suspect. He was then placed under arrest and charged with 4 counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime with Intent to Commit a Felony.

Mr. Wright was transported to the station and processed without incident; he was arraigned at the Worcester County District Court on Monday, August 23, 2010.
