Male Arrested for Breaking Into Store

Worcester, MA (March 11, 2010) - On March 10, 2010 at approximately 1:30 AM Worcester Police responded to the Gulf Gas Station located at 399 Southbridge Street for a commercial alarm call. Upon the officers arrival they observed a glass door which had a section of it smashed out and traces of blood on the door. Shortly after the officers arrival the owner of the store arrived and allowed the officers safely inside the store. The officers searched the premises for the suspect with negative results. During the search it appeared that the suspect had received a substantial cut as there was blood evidence throughout the store. It also appeared that the suspect took a significant amount of cigarettes and lottery tickets.

At this time the owner played back the security video camera for the officers and they could clearly make out the type of clothing the suspect had on as well as his physical description and age range. The suspect was also carrying a duffel bag which was in the video as well.

After reviewing the tapes and gathering information the officers cleared from the store. The officers then traveled west on Hammond Street, heading towards Main Street. While approaching the signal light at Hammond and Main Streets officer Timothy Reynolds looked over to the Dunkin Donuts and noticed a duffle bag sitting on the ground next to the door to the store. This duffle bag looked just like the one that the suspect had been carrying as seen on the security video. Officers pulled into the parking lot and inquired as to who owned the bag to several patrons inside the store. Officer Reynolds then noticed a male sitting inside a car parked in the Dunkin Donuts parking lot that fit the physical description of the suspect as well as the clothing that he had on. The officer approached the vehicle and asked the male to exit the vehicle. As he exited the car the officers could see that this male was the one that they observed in the store video camera. The officers also observed that the male had fresh cuts on his hands and noticed a bag in the back seat with scratch tickets sticking out of the top. Upon further review the bag also contained numerous packs of cigarettes which were the same brand as the ones taken from the store.

Officers then conducted a check on the vehicle that the suspect was sitting in and it came back to a stolen motor vehicle. At this time the male was identified as Richard Manley, 48 years old of 187 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Mr. Manley was placed under arrest and charged with Willful and Maliciously Vandalizing and Defacing Property, Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime With Intent to Commit a Felony, Larceny From a Building, Possession of Burglarious Instruments and Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle.
