Worcester, MA (March 3, 2017)- On Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at approximately 1:22 AM, Worcester Police responded to the area of 293 Cambridge Street for a reported ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, officers located two spent shell casings in the area but were unable to locate any victims.
Worcester Police Detectives responded to the scene to locate any possible witnesses as well as to collect evidence. Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit also responded to the scene to document and process various items.
As a result of the investigation, members of the Detective Bureau learned that two males were walking east in the area of 293 Cambridge Street at the time of the ShotSpotter call. The investigation also revealed that both of these individuals were in possession of handguns, and that they each fired their handgun across Cambridge Street in the direction of St. John’s Cemetery before leaving the area.
Detectives were able to identify the males involved as 27 year old Phuc Truong and 29 year old Hung Nguyen, both of Worcester. Police learned that neither of the above individuals possessed a License to Carry a Firearm. As a result, police developed probable cause to arrest both males on the charges of Carrying a Firearm w/out a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Discharging a Firearm w/in 500 feet of a Dwelling.
On Thursday, March 2, 2017 at approximately 1:30 PM, Detectives observed Truong operating a motor vehicle on Southbridge Street in Worcester. Police conducted a traffic stop of his vehicle and placed him under arrest for the above charges.
During the investigation, police learned that both Truong and Nguyen reside in the third floor apartment at 15 Camp Street. At the same time Truong was being stopped, other Detectives were conducting surveillance at 15 Camp Street. At approximately 3:00 PM, Detectives observed Nguyen exit 15 Camp Street. Detectives approached him and placed him under arrest without incident. During a search of Nguyen, officers located 7 bags of marijuana packaged for sale.
Based on the totality of the investigation and information received, Detectives applied for and were granted search warrants for 15 Camp Street apartment 3 as well as Nguyen’s vehicle which was located parked behind 15 Camp Street. As a result of the search of the apartment, Detectives located an additional amount of marijuana along with an amount of currency. As a result of a search of the vehicle, officers recovered three shotguns, a sawed off shotgun, two handguns, and a .45 caliber Thompson semi -automatic carbine rifle.
Truong is being Charged with Carrying a Firearm w/out a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Discharging a Firearm w/in 500 feet of a Dwelling, and Possession of a Class D Substance w/ Intent to Distribute.
Nguyen is being charged with Carrying a Firearm w/out a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Discharging a Firearm w/in 500 feet of a Dwelling, Possession of a Class D Substance w/ Intent to Distribute, two counts of Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Rifle, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, 4 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Shotgun, One Count of Possession of a Sawed-off Shotgun, and Possession of Ammunition w/out FID.
Both individuals are scheduled to be arraigned today in Worcester District Court.
