Worcester, MA (June 20, 2017) – On June 20th, 2017 at about 6:55 PM, members of the Worcester Police Gang Unit were on patrol in an unmarked cruiser in the area of Grafton and Franklin St. As they were sitting in traffic, they saw a gray Hyundai with New York plates operated by Kasheen Cunningham, twenty-years-old of Belchertown. The officers were familiar with Mr. Cunningham, who is a member of a local gang, and knew that he did not have a valid driver’s license. They activated their cruiser lights and stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Grafton and Franklin St.
Police asked Mr. Cunningham to step out of the vehicle. He did so, and took off running toward Temple St, disturbing traffic and several citizens on foot in the area. After chasing him from Temple St to Harding St, officers saw Mr. Cunningham hiding under a piece of machinery. They ordered him out, and he eventually complied and was placed under arrest.
The front seat passenger in the vehicle, Tyemike Smith, twenty-two-years-old of 42 Grand St, is also a local gang member. Officers conducted a frisk of the vehicle, and found a loaded handgun. Kasheen Cunningham was arrested for Driving without a License, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Possession of Ammunition without an FID card, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest. Tyemike Smith was arrested and charged with Carrying a Firearm without a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, and Possession of Ammunition without an FID card. Both will be arraigned today in Worcester District Court.
