Worcester, MA (July 20, 2017) – On Thursday July 20th, 2017, at about 6:45 PM, Worcester police were dispatched to Jack’s Variety Store at 140 Vernon St for a report of an armed robbery involving a handgun and a knife. Officers spoke with the victim, who said that four young males robbed the store and fled on foot down Windham St. The males stole about $500 cash, cigars and cigar wraps, cigarettes, and lottery tickets. One of the males pointed a handgun at the clerk during the robbery. Officers were able to access the surveillance system and watch the robbery take place. They broadcast the suspects’ descriptions over the radio, and police checked the area for the males.
Shortly afterward, police received a call from a resident on Perry Ave saying that four males ran into a multi-family house on Perry Ave, and emerged afterward wearing different clothing. Officers located and detained four juvenile suspects on Perry Ave. After comparing the males to the suspects in the surveillance footage, officers placed them under arrest. A search incident to arrest revealed the clothes worn by the suspects in the surveillance footage, cigar wrappers, and cash. The handgun was also recovered, and it turned out to be a pellet gun. These realistic replicas can be very difficult to distinguish from working firearms.
One of the juveniles is fourteen-years-old, one is sixteen-years-old, and two are fifteen-years-old. They are all charged with Armed Robbery While Masked and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. They will be arraigned in Worcester District Court.
