Fights on Water St Result in Three Arrests

Worcester, MA (May 15, 2017) – On Monday May 15, 2017 at about 1:55 AM, an officer working an off-duty assignment at Mambo Drinks nightclub called out for assistance with a large, unruly crowd on Water St. As officers arrived, they observed several individuals appear to be getting ready to fight each other. As officers dispersed the crowd, several groups of five to ten people remained behind and continued to antagonize each other.

One male, later identified as Luis Ayala, twenty-three years old of Southbridge, was particularly aggressive in trying to fight. After he refused police requests to leave the area several times, officers approached him. Mr. Ayala began telling his friends to surround the officers, and was yelling “I have guns too, I’m ready!” Mr. Ayala continued refusing orders to take his hands out of his pockets, so police approached him and attempted to take his hands out of his pockets. He responded by spitting directly in the face of an officer. Mr. Ayala was told he was under arrest, to which he responded by throwing punches at the officers present. After a brief struggle, he was placed in handcuffs. He is being charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, and Intimidation of a Witness.

During the arrest of Mr. Ayala, another male, later identified as Luis Figueroa, twenty-six years old of Southbridge, came up behind one of the officers and struck the officer in the back of his head. Mr. Figueroa was placed under arrest and taken into custody. He is being charged with Intimidation of a Witness, Interfering with a Police Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

While officers were bringing Mr. Ayala and Mr. Figueroa to the wagon, an unidentified female began blocking their path and screaming at them. Because she was interfering with the arrest of the two males, the female was told she was under arrest. As officers approached her to place her in handcuffs, a male identified as Jose Pena, twenty-two years old of Southgate St, stepped in front of the female and pushed the officer in the chest. Mr. Pena was placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Interfering with a Police Officer. All three males will be arraigned in Worcester District Court. The female left the area during the struggle with the males.
