Worcester, MA (July 5, 2011) - On Sunday July 3, 2011 at approximately 2:20 AM Worcester Police Officers responded to the intersection of Beacon Street and Oread Street for report of a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, officers discovered a one-vehicle accident. The lone occupant and operator of the vehicle was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Jonathan Jones of Worcester. The exact cause of death has not been determined and is pending results of an autopsy to be performed by the State Medical Examiners Office in Boston.
The Worcester Police Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Preliminary results of the investigation have determined the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, operated by Mr. Jones, was traveling south on Beacon Street at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. The force of the collision forced the Jeep backwards to a side yard at 43 Oread Street.
