Worcester, MA (July 25, 2017) – On 7/25/17 at about 6:45 PM, police received a call for a report of a motor vehicle that had crashed into a wooden pole in the area of 1160 West Boylston St. Officers responded and found a gold colored Hyundai with heavy front-end damage. The vehicle was occupied by the driver, later identified as Joseph Stockmal, twenty-four-years-old of Holden, and a front-seat passenger. The wooden pole and the vehicle were both heavily damaged.
Witnesses said that the Hyundai had been striking the curb on West Boylston St before it crashed. At one point, the vehicle hopped the curb, drove on to a yard, before returning back to the street. When officers spoke with Mr. Stockmal, they noticed what appeared to be a fresh needle injection site in his arm. He appeared to be under the influence of opiates. He admitted to taking heroin before the crash, and was treated by paramedics for overdose symptoms.
The Accident Reconstruction Unit and Crime Scene Unit arrived and investigated. Mr. Stockmal and the passenger were transported to the hospital. Mr. Stockmal was eventually arrested at the hospital and charged with Operating while under the Influence of Drugs, Operating to Endanger, Speeding, and a Marked Lanes violation. He will be arraigned today in Worcester District Court.
